Private Importing – Beware

We hear of some horror stories where people think they can save thousands by importing a car privately from overseas.

While you may get lucky,  a couple of the large Japanese based retail exporters offer stock on their website which won’t comply in New Zealand, although it may be ok in other countries with few or no rules.

They do make a disclaimer that you need to check the rules in your own country, these customers had failed to do that.

Dealing with a reputable New Zealand company would have avoided this situation from occurring, our thorough inspection process in Japan would ensure a car like this was never purchased.

Here is an example that has recently arrived.

This Nissan Tiida probably had a swim in the Fukushima Tsunami, it has been immersed in salt water with rust showing everywhere in the floor pan. The photos show in the boot area and under rear seat, but the rust is present all the way forward under the carpets, even the engine is covered in corrosion.

This car like this is almost impossible to comply for use on New Zealand roads, so it’s next stop will probably be to the wreckers, with the customer loosing all their money.
